Chapter Twenty-Six: Cross/Double Cross

First thing in the morning, an army of two thousand Fulani soldiers led by Lamdo Salli’s new general Malam Munde marched into the outskirts of Balda and met an equal number of Shuwa soldiers waiting for them led by Hayah himself. Hayah had set a trap for them. Even though it looked like there were two thousand soldiers waiting for the attack, it was actually one thousand men arranged in a straight line that was ten men thick. Behind them were wooden structures built and arranged to look like men wearing the Shuwa uniform and Armor. So, when the Fulani soldiers descended on them, it looked like they were up against all of Hayah’s men. As soon as the battle started, another column of Shuwa Soldiers ten soldiers thick, numbering up to one thousand men, enveloped them, while five hundred on each side completed the encirclement, with another one thousand still hiding and waiting for the next batch of Lamdo Salli’s men to attack and be enveloped too. The battle was fierce and bloody. Rabbeh’s men were fearless and strong; with Hayah’s training, they seemed invincible. They had guns, but did not use them in this first wave of the battle.
